7 Tips in Helping an Addict
Educate Yourself
When someone struggles with addiction, they are often dependent on substances or behaviors to feel happy. Understanding the disease process and how it impacts family members can help loved ones stay away from harmful habits that will only hurt them more than anyone else ever could!
There is plenty of information out there for those who want answers-SAMHSA has great educational resources which provide insight into this complex issue while also providing access groups/support through their website as well internet searches about addictions, diseases processes etc... Get Support The difficulty in life caused by addiction can be overwhelming. There are support groups for family members and friends who have lost someone to an alcoholic or drug-addicted loved one, including Alateen (focused on Alcohol) Nar-Anon( focused primarily towards prescription drug abuse), but also other types such as II Married Men's Group which deals specifically with men struggling between their desire/needs versus what they think is right when dealing with their situation. Get Counseling We all know how hard it is to live with an addict. There are many resources available for you, but they can be difficult and time-consuming if not found by oneself or one's family members on their own initiative (ie: conducting google searches).
However there may also exist the option of getting individual counseling which would assist both parties in finding what each needs from therapy - whether it's just emotional support; helping manage cravings/addiction symptoms like withdrawal discomfort.
